School Health Advisory Council (SHAC)

What is SHAC?

SHAC is a group of individuals, representative of segments of the community, appointed by the school district to serve at the district level. They provide advice on coordinated school health programs and its impact on student health and learning.

Every independent school district is required by law to have a School Health Advisory Council (SHAC); of which, the majority of members must be parents who are not employed by the school district. (Title 2, Chapter 28, Section 28.004 of the Texas Education code)

It is important to emphasize that SHAC provides advice and can only make recommendations to the District's Board of Trustees. They are not part of the paid administrative staff or structure of the schools; nor do they have legal responsibilities within the school district.

The Superintendent, Dr. Robert Lowry, is responsible for oversight of the District's wellness policy and plan.

If you are interested in becoming a member of the SHAC Council, please contact Coolidge ISD at 254-786-4833.

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the new school year!!! There are a few things that you will need to know. Hopefully this will help you get organized and ready for the school year. Please use this as a check-off list for anything that applies to your student.

  1. All medications are to go to the nurse's office to assure that we have what is needed by law.
  2. I must have signed permission from you every new school year.
  3. The medication label must be attached to the bottle and easy to read.
  4. The prescription must be for your student.
  5. If your student uses an inhaler, the inhaler must have a prescription label on it. The pharmacy will do this if you let them know it will be kept at the school. It must also be in the original inhaler box with a prescription label on it as well.
  6. #5 applies to Epi Pens also.
  7. If you want your student to carry their own inhaler or epi pen on their person during the school day, I will need a letter from the doctor stating that your student is able to carry the inhaler/epi pen on them. This indicates that the doctor and you as their parent are comfortable with them keeping up with the medication, administering the medication as needed and not sharing the medication with another student. Not all students are this responsible yet; but if you feel your student is, I must have the information on file in the nurse's office.
  8. If you want your student to have over the counter medications such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen etc…, you must provide these in the original bottle. As the school nurse I am not permitted by law to give meds to a student without the parent/guardian written permission or a prescription from the doctor.
  9. No medications will be transported daily by a student. If your student has a medication to be sent home daily, an adult must bring it and pick it up.

Thank you for your support.

Queridos Padres,
